RADAR CHECK: The upper trough moving into Alabama has certainly been the overachiever today. Models suggested nothing more than isolated showers, but the cold core system has brought a mix of graupel, sleet, rain, and even a few snow flakes to North/Central Alabama today. The precipitation will end this evening, and no travel impact is expected tonight as the wave moves on to the east.
An upper-level shortwave is tracking across the state today and is bringing us more clouds than sun, and even a few light showers on the radar with some sleet and graupel being reported.
Patchy Freezing Fog will continue to result in visibility reductions across portions of north central Alabama, northeast Alabama and southern Middle Tennessee through 11 AM CST.
Sleet is falling across parts of West Alabama this morning. There is also some black ice on highways in the Birmingham area.
There have been several accidents reported on the highways this morning across the Birmingham Metropolitan Area along with slick spots.
ICY BRIDGES: Fog is fairly widespread across Alabama early this morning, and with temperatures below freezing, the “freezing fog” is creating ice on bridges and overpasses. Many wrecks have already been reported; be VERY careful if you are driving early this morning. Temperatures will be above freezing by 9:00 a.m.
