The cold front is stalled across South Alabama as we head into the afternoon hours. Along and south of the front, rain and a few strong storms will remain a threat today across South Alabama. North of the front, we are dry and seeing more sun than clouds with temperatures in the 60s.
ON THE MAPS: A cold front is nearing U.S. 80 this morning; a band of showers persists ahead of the front. Those showers will continue to drift slowly southward today, and a few stronger storms are possible later across the southeast part of the state, where SPC has defined a “marginal risk” (level 1/5) of severe thunderstorms.
NWS Birmingham cancels the Tornado Watch for Cherokee, Etowah, Jefferson, and Tuscaloosa counties.
An isolated severe threat may persist for a couple more hours early this morning before gradually diminishing. A couple of tornadoes and occasional strong/gusty winds should be the main threats.
At 143 AM CST, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm near Mertz, or 15 miles northeast of Greensboro, moving east at 45 mph.
A line of rain and storms continues to slowly move eastward through Central Alabama while the individual cells within the line rapidly move northeast.
A new Tornado Watch has been issued for portions of Central Alabama until 6:00 am.
At 1208 AM CST, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located over Piedmont, moving east at 45 mph.
Radar at 12:04 am shows a line of storms stretching from the northeastern parts of the area back to the west and southwest, stretching from Piedmont and Gadsden to Warrior and Adamsville to Tuscaloosa and Geiger.
