Thunderstorms Rumbling Across Birmingham

Thunderstorms are moving across the Birmingham metro area at this hour.

They are elevated in nature, meaning that their instability source is not near the ground, but up above the surface.

That makes for some long, rumbly thunderclaps as the lightning channels are longer.

The storms are no threat to be severe but are producing copious lightning and some brief heavy rain.

No severe weather is expected today or tonight in Central Alabama. The threat area is to the north over the Ohio Valley. The SPC does have a marginal risk just clipping the northwest corner of the state for tonight.
