Dog Days Of Summer

| August 4, 2016 @ 6:15 am

AUGUST IN ALABAMA: It’s a new day, but an old forecast. This is the time of the year when Alabama’s weather just doesn’t change much. You know it will be hot and humid, and scattered storms will be around, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. We project a high in the mid 90s today for most communities as we are still in the hottest part of summer (our average high won’t begin to fall until August 16). Chance of any one spot seeing a shower or storm today is about one in three.

The NWS continues a “heat advisory” for parts of Alabama where the heat index is expected to touch 105 this afternoon, but I assure you won’t notice any real difference between those in and out of that advisory.

TOMORROW/SATURDAY: Models suggest the air will be a tad drier on these two days, so showers and storms should be a little fewer in number. Still hot, still humid with highs in the mid 90s. A good supply of sunshine both days.

SUNDAY AND NEXT WEEK: The air aloft becomes a little colder, meaning we should see an uptick in the number of scattered showers and storms. Highs drop a bit into the low 90s; in fact the GFS hints we could hold in the upper 80s by Tuesday and Wednesday. But, the overall weather won’t change all that much. It’s August in Alabama. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

EARL IS INLAND: He moved into Belize last night as a category one hurricane; Earl will weaken today as it moves westward, and will bring a flood threat into southern Mexico. The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet, and additional tropical storm formation is not expected through the weekend.

AT THE BEACH: Some impressive storms on the coast during the night… photo below is from John Oldshue at Fairhope…

The general idea is for about 6 to 8 hours of sunshine daily through the weekend from Panama City Beach over to Gulf Shores, and of course, an occasional passing thunderstorm is likely this time of the year. Highs will be in the upper 80s on the immediate coast, with mid 90s inland. The sea water temperature early this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 87 degrees. See a very detailed Gulf Coast forecast here.
