Tough Day

Thanks to Brook Duncan for this account of a wild day…

I left work today unprepared for what was obviously inevitable.

My car was so out of gas that the “out of gas” light was on, and the needle was past the safe zone. I always tell myself I can last one more day (I live only 3 miles from work now) so I always take those chances.

Today was not a good day to take that chance. Hysteria has hit the southeatern coast, and in a huge way. I continued past the single gas station in my area (took me over an hour because the people waiting in line were literally blocking traffic…at 5:00 pm. Great timing) I later realized why they were blocking traffic. As I drove my car on empty to pick up my daughter and go home, I realized these people wanted to save .50 a gallon!

Fifty cents a gallon savings over just getting home. Did those people need gas because they were running on empty? For some reason, I don’t think so.

I would have paid $30 a gallon to get my kid and go home while running on empty. It wasn’t an option for me today to run out of gas. I didn’t want to fill up (no fool would at those prices) but I did end up waiting in line, being called all kinds of names when the gas ran out at the station I was using…in the middle of my $5 pump. I really, honestly just wanted to make it home.

I did, thankfully. I’m sitting tight. Just wanted you to know it’s a war zone out there.
