Mostly Dry the Theme

As I was doing the video, I realized that the word “dry” was being used a lot, so that seems to be the theme for the next week or so across Central Alabama. Of course, we’ll see a few showers today and Sunday.

A weak trough off to the west of Alabama is responsible for some showers, but with little movement it appears likely that the main threat for showers will remain across the Tennessee River Valley and west of Interstate 65. Those showers, however, will help to keep the sky cloudy for the most part though we’ll see a few peeks at the sun from time to time today. It should be a little brighter tomorrow with somewhat fewer clouds as the trough weakens and pulls a bit further from Central Alabama.

By Monday we’re well out of it with high pressure and dry weather settling in for what appears to be a fairly long stay – at least through next weekend according to the current projections.

Temperatures in mid-September should be running in the lower 60s for lows and mid-80s for highs. Our temperatures will be a little warmer than that on lows and a little below on the highs for the next couple of days. As we head into Tuesday and the rest of the week it looks like we settle into temperatures just about typical for mid-September.

Our drought situation is much improved from last year. The Drought Monitor shows only Cherokee County in “severe” drought even though much of the northern two-thirds of Alabama does remain in dry conditions. A quick check at the official observations from the Birmingham International Airport shows a total for this year around 44 inches which is a surplus of about 4 inches. That puts us in pretty good shape as we head toward the driest month of the year, October!

Not much change to the dry theme in much of voodoo country. But as we head into October, the GFS long range projections suggest a fairly vigorous trough around the 5th which could bring a good shot at some rain and some much colder weather. But that is voodoo right now.
