Storms Near Tupelo Will Move into Franklin and Marion County Before 6 p.m.

| March 9, 2017 @ 5:17 pm

Thunderstorms that developed south of Oxford MS around 3:45 p.m. are now pushing east of Tupelo at this hour. They are moving east northeast at 35 mph.

They will push into Alabama’s Marion and Franklin Counties before 6 p.m.

The lightning has diminished over the past 15 minutes, but there should be sufficient instability ahead of the storms into West Alabama for them to hold together. Indeed, low level lapse rates are very conducive for the storms to persist.

But they should not be severe. But they will produce lightning and brief heavy rain along with some gusty winds.

The main activity will come later this evening as storms over Missouri arrive in North Alabama after 11 p.m.

The SPC has a slight risk for severe weather late tonight over areas north of a line from Detroit in Lamar County to Arley, Cullman, Albertville, Fort Payne and Valley Head.

A marginal risk extends southward to a line from Reform to Homewood to Heflin.

Damaging winds will be the main threat. There is a small chance of a tornado over the Northwest Corner of the state, but the threat is too small to mention for the rest of North and Central Alabama.
