Sleet?

Viewer Cindy Horton asks if she and her husband are crazy.

James…at 3:00 here in Clay/Trussville we had a burst of sleet that lasted about 30 seconds. The temp was about 48 degrees. Am i crazy? Cause husband and I both are.

No, Cindy, you aren’t crazy. With the cold mid level thicknesses today, it is quite possible. Some precipitation that started out as snow might have melted into rain then frozen as it fell through a pocket of freezing air above the aurface.

We will check out the temperature through the atmosphere on the upper air balloon release from the Shelby County Airport at 6 p.m. tonight to see exactly what happened.

So don’t be surprised if you have a little snap, crackle and pop with your light precipitation early this evening. It should all be gone by midnight, or sooner.
