Clouds Invade Alabama

A deck of clouds at about 10,000 feet has invaded the northwestern third of Alabama tonight. The layer of clouds extends generally northwest from I-59. It is trying to push southeast, but the leading edge is being eroded by drier air the further east it progresses.

The clouds will play havoc with temperatures. They will act as a blanket where they persist, keeping temperatures up in the 30s overnight. Where it is clear, readings will drop like a rock, with 20s predominant in eastern sections. Colder locations such as protected valleys will drop into the lower 20s with a few teens thrown in by morning.

The clouds are asspcoated with some return moisture being acted upon by a southeastward bound upper level disturbance over Illinois late this afternoon.

A few light returns are showing up on radar over Northwest Alabama, but they are likely only brief sprinkles if they are reaching the ground at all. Surface observations from Northeast Mississippi and Northwest Alabama show no precipitation so far, but don’t surprised to see a few light droplets hitting your windshield this evening.
