Sleet!
When I saw those radar returns in Northwest Alabama this evening, I thought for a moment that they looked like they could have been sleet.
That was confimed by several blog readers tonight across the area.
Light precipitation is still showing on radar tonight…from DeKalb, Etowah, Cherokee, Clahoun and Cleburne Counties on the east, through Marshall, Cullman, Blount and northern Walker Counties down into Pickens and Tuscaloosa Counties.
Those returns over Pickens County look suspiciously like sleet from Macedonia and between Reform and Gordo along US-82. It will be interesting to see the precipitation type at the Tuscaloosa Airport as the precipitation passes.
The upper air sounding from Calera tonight indicated a profile that was supportive of sleet. Of course, no problems are expected, just a little snap, crackle and pop to a few spots across the area.
Temperatures are in the 40s across Central Alabama, with th einsulating influence of the cloud cover. It was 37F at Alexander City, where skies are not completely cloudy. At Fort Benning, the mercury has already fallen to 27F! Skies there are mainly clear.
