Some Late Morning Notes

| April 5, 2017 @ 10:38 am

*A very volatile situation is setting up for much of Alabama this afternoon as the air becomes more unstable. As expected, the morning storms have produced large hail and strong winds. We have had a few tornado warnings over South Alabama, where the air is more unstable.

*If the sun is shining where you are, the severe weather risk is NOT over. It will simply help in the destabilization process.

*The tornado watch is being cleared for some counties in Central and West Alabama, but another watch is likely within a few hours that will carry us through the afternoon and evening hours.

*SPC is considering an upgrade to “high risk” for parts of East Alabama on their new outlook due shortly. But, that isn’t all that important. The impact we have been forecasting is the same.

*A few supercell storms are likely this afternoon over the eastern two-thirds of Alabama; all modes of severe weather are possible, including large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes.

*A few strong/violent, long track tornadoes are possible over the eastern half of the state this afternoon and into the evening hours.

*The threat of severe storms will end in Tuscaloosa around 3:00… Birmingham around 4:30… and Anniston/Gadsden around 7:00.

CALL TO ACTION: Be sure you have a way of getting warnings; a NOAA Weather Radio is the baseline, and a good smart phone app is the other tier. Identify the safe place in your home, and be sure everyone knows where it is. And, in that safe place have helmets for everyone, along with hard sole shoes and preferably a portable airhorn in case you need help.

Be sure you have the ABC 33/40 app on your phone so you can watch our live severe weather coverage, if needed:
