10:55 am Update

That lonely cluster of thunderstorms over NW Alabama continues to move generally eastward. It is about the only action in the state at this hour. At 10:55, a small, but fairly strong, thunderstorm was crossing the Winston-Cullman County line into extreme NW Cullman County. The other one was moving out of NE Lawrence County into Limestone County.

NWS-Huntsville advises that the storms were moving east at 20 and to expect pea-size hail, winds up to 40 and frequent cloud-to-ground lightning. The Cullman County storms will affect Jones Chapel and Logan.

PERSONAL NOTE:

Today is the anniversary of the so-called Super Outbreak of tornadoes on April 3, 1974 when North Alabama was devastated. Please scroll down to see some memories of that day posted by Bill Murray and James Spann. I worked 17 hours without a break during that tragic event and Bill’s posting of a lot of the information we issued that night brings back tragic memories–ones that I will never forget. The story has been well covered, so I will probably not post anything except possibly a brief account of the most memorable telephone call I ever received during my 32-year career with NWS-Birmingham.
