Severe Weather Overnight to our West

| December 26, 2008 @ 10:36 pm | 2 Replies

A strong upper trough moving out of the Rockies into the Plains states will trigger severe weather overnight and on Saturday.

Storms are beginning to fire at this hour from eastern Kansas into western Missouri. Instability will be increasing, and wind shear values are extremely high.

With intense winds at about 5,000 feet, it will be simple for damaging winds to translate to the surface. And with a strong low level jet, tornadoes will be possible overnight.

The severe weather will continue on Saturday across a wide area from eastern Texas and Oklahoma eastward into much of northern Mississippi, western Tennessee and Kentucky, northward into southern Illinois and Indiana.

The greatest threat for severe weather including tornadoes will exist from eastern Texas into northwestern Louisiana and the Ozarks of Arkansas and Missouri.

The system will arrive in Alabama late Saturday night into Sunday morning. This is good news, because instability values will be at their lowest. We will be dealing with another low instability, high shear event. Damaging winds along the squall line will be the biggest threat. While widespread severe weather is not likely, there will probably be several warnings overnight.

Put that Weatheradio Santa brought to good use and have it on alert tomorrow night. If you forgot to put it on your list, head out tomorrow and get one.
