Splendid September Saturday

| September 2, 2017 @ 1:09 pm

This first Saturday of September is certainly a nice one for the state of Alabama. We all know September can be brutally hot here, but this weekend, there is definitely a hint of fall in the air.

We are seeing ample sunshine this afternoon, and we are going to maintain the mainly clear conditions the rest of today. Temperatures are mostly in the upper 70s and lower 80s this afternoon, but with those dew points in the 60s, it is feeling rather comfy.

Heading into tonight, another very comfortable night with a clear sky, lows should range from the upper 50s to mid 60s.

TOMORROW AND LABOR DAY: Little change in the forecast the next two days as our weather will be highlighted by dry and sunny conditions. Both days expect mainly sunny conditions for nearly all Alabama with warm afternoon temperatures; nights should be fair and pleasant. Highs in the 80s, lows in the 60s and 50s.

HURRICANE IRMA: At 1100 AM AST, the eye of Hurricane Irma was located near latitude 18.8 North, longitude 43.3 West. Irma is moving toward the west near 15 mph and a turn toward the west-southwest at a slightly slower rate of speed during the next two days. Maximum sustained winds are near 110 mph with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours. Irma is a small hurricane. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles. The estimated minimum central pressure is 973 mb (28.74 inches). No threat to land through until mid week.

ELSEWHERE IN THE TROPICS: Disorganized showers and thunderstorms located a few hundred miles southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands are associated with a tropical wave. Environmental conditions are expected to become more conducive for development in a couple of days, and this system could become a tropical depression early next week while it moves westward at 10 to 15 mph over the tropical Atlantic. Formation chance through 5 days…70 percent. Next name on the list is Jose.
