Tropics Haven’t Looked This Busy Since 2010

| September 7, 2017 @ 12:01 pm

There are three hurricanes occurring simultaneously in the Atlantic basin right now, Irma, Jose and Katia.

It is the first time that has happened since September 17, 2019, when Igor, Julia and Karl were all simultaneously hurricanes, in generally the same locations as today’s storms.

ADDED NOTE
Friend of the Podcast Dr. Phil Klotzbach reports that Hurricane Irma has already expended as much Accumulated Cyclone Energy as twelve complete North Atlantic hurricane seasons. ACE Is a measurement of the intensity of a hurricane multiplied over time and gives us a way to compare hurricane seasons. Irma officially had maximum winds of 185 mph from 1 p.m. on September 5th until midnight on September 7th. That is a remarkable 35 hours that we had 185 mph hurricane. Dr. Klotzbach says that is a record as well. Not just for the Atlantic, but for any basin.
