Cuban Radars Tracking Irma

| September 8, 2017 @ 10:17 am

Radars from the Instituto de Meteorologia de la Repulica de Cuba are tracking the center of Hurricane Irma this morning.

It will be interesting to see if the current westward track takes the southern part of the core over land and can keep it from restrengthening to a category five.

But the Hurricane Hunter is still finding a powerful category four hurricane with flight level winds of 170 mph and surface winds of 138 mph. The central pressure is hovering around 927-929 mb.

And the hurricane will have 24 hours crossing the warm waters of the Florida Straits between Cuba and South Florida tomorrow and Sunday as it turns northwestward.

At worst, Irma will be a strong category four when it reaches South Florida. It could just as easily be a category five.
