Cold Sunday Afternoon

So much for highs in the 40s this afternoon. Temperatures generally have not been able to break out of the 30s. Anniston started out at 40F at 7 a.m., but fell back into the 30s during the morning hours. Tuscaloosa did get up to 40F at 11 a.m. Birmingham remains in the upper 30s. Haleyville was at 32F at 1 p.m., where it has been most of the morning.

Clouds were hanging tough across the state. Clear had reached eastern Mississippi and will edge into western Alabama before sunset. The rest of the area will clear this evening.

Temperatures will fall into the middle and upper 20s across much of the area, with some lower 20s in colder spots.

Intense Arctic cold is going to be headed toward Alabama by midweek. Scroll down on the blog to read James’ latest thought. No real change in our forecast thinking. Hard freezes will be likely, especially Friday morning, which lows around 10-12F will be common and single digits in the colder spots.

No significant precipitation is expected during the work week, although there could be a few snow flurries early Tuesday and perhaps Thursday. We will be watching a weekend storm system in the Gulf that could feature a changeover to snow at the end Sunday night. But we have seen similar model signatures a couple of times recently, so we will just have to wait and see.
