Tornado Watch For Parts of South Alabama & Florida Panhandle

| October 8, 2017 @ 1:19 am

The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a Tornado Watch effective this Sunday morning from 1:40 AM until 10:00 AM CDT for portions of…
* South central and southeast Alabama
* The western Florida Panhandle
* Coastal Waters

Primary threats include…
* A couple tornadoes possible
* Isolated damaging wind gusts to 70 mph possible

The outer eastern convective bands of Nate will continue to pose the threat for a couple of tornadoes through the morning hours.

The tornado watch area is approximately along and 60 statute miles east and west of a line from 25 miles north northwest of Troy AL to 45 miles south southwest of Panama City FL. For a complete depiction of the watch see the associated watch outline update.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

REMEMBER…A Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible warnings.

A tornado threat continues with embedded low-level rotational couplets in the eastern to northeastern convective band of Hurricane Nate. As Nate tracks to the north-northeast overnight, a brief tornado or two should affect mainly south-central and southeast Alabama and the western Florida Panhandle. A new tornado watch will be coordinated with area NWS forecast offices.

The center of Nate is expected to move to the north-northeast overnight from far southeast Mississippi into southwest Alabama (Washington and Choctaw Counties) by 7:00 AM. Despite marginal buoyancy during the overnight, the presence of tropical moisture (surface dew points in the middle 70s) through southern and central Alabama and strong low-level shear associated with Nate will maintain a sufficient environment for a tornado threat through tonight into the morning.
