At A Little Later Than Midday, Skies Clearing Out Across Central Alabama

| November 16, 2017 @ 1:47 pm

CONDITIONS AT 1:40 PM

For the most part across Central Alabama, we have mostly clear skies as we make the approach to the 2:00 PM hour, with some cloud cover over the southwestern corner of the area. Temperatures are not that bad as well at this time, with lower 60s to the lower 70s showing up on the latest readings.

AIR QUALITY IS GETTING MUCH BETTER

As of the 12:00 PM update from the Alabama Department of Environmental and the Jefferson County Department of Health, the Air Quality Index has dropped from 161 at 8:00 AM down to 83, which is in the moderate range. With the winds picking up a little and skies clearing out with the cold front moving through, the quality will continue to get better.

WEATHER FOR THE REST OF YOUR THURSDAY

Skies will continue to clear throughout the remainder of the afternoon and early evening hours, as the cold front has now pushed south of the area. Afternoon highs will be in the mid-60s to the lower 70s. As you head out the door this evening, we can expect mostly clear skies and cool temperatures. We will be in the mid to upper 50s for the most part at 6:00 PM, and dropping into the mid-40s to the mid-50s by 9:00 PM. Overnight lows will be in the mid-30s to the mid-40s throughout Central Alabama, with a few colder spots possibly dropping below the freezing mark before dawn.

FRIDAY’S WEATHER

It will be a fantastic Friday across Central Alabama… Skies will be mostly clear the entire day, with afternoon highs warming up into the mid-60s to the lower 70s throughout the area. We will stay mostly clear throughout the evening and late night hours, but clouds will start to build in the west during the overnight hours. No worries for those heading out to those high school football games. At 6:00 PM, temperatures will be in the mid-50s to the lower 60s, and dropping into the lower 50s to the lower 60s by 10:00 PM. Overnight lows will be in the upper 40s to the upper 50s.

THE WEEKEND’S WEATHER

The bad news is that we’ll have showers and maybe a couple of thunderstorms to deal with for late Saturday afternoon through early Sunday morning. The good news is that the better dynamic support for the cold front that will be moving through will be northwest of the state, keeping any risk of severe weather well north of the area. Rain amounts of 1/2 inch or less throughout the area is possible. Highs on Saturday will be in the upper 60s to the mid-70s, while it will be much cooler on Sunday with the highs only reaching the 50s with a cool northwesterly wind.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL WEATHER

Alabama will be hosting Mercer at Bryant-Denny Stadium, with the kickoff scheduled for 11:00 AM. We’ll have mostly cloudy skies throughout the game and a chance of a shower during the second half. Temperatures will be in the 60s.

Auburn will be hosting Louisiana-Monroe at Jordan-Hare Stadium, with the kickoff scheduled for 11:00 AM. No rain issues during the game, but skies will be mostly cloudy. Temperatures will be in the upper 60s to near 70 degrees.

UAB makes a visit to Gainesville to take on Florida, with kickoff scheduled at 3:00 PM CST. Expect mostly sunny skies throughout the game, with temperatures in the upper 70s at kickoff, and dropping back into the mid-70s for the second half.

TROPICS

An elongated area of low pressure that extends from southwest to northeast across the central Caribbean Sea is producing a large area of disorganized shower and thunderstorm activity. While strong upper-level winds are expected to prevent significant development, heavy rainfall is possible over portions of the
northwestern coast of Colombia, Hispaniola, and Puerto Rico during the next few days while the low meanders over the central Caribbean Sea and interacts with an upper-level trough. Formation chance is very low through the next 5 days.
