Freeze Warning Tonight, Tranquil Week Ahead

| November 19, 2017 @ 1:59 pm

It is a mostly sunny and chilly afternoon across Alabama today. Temperatures have edged out of the 40s in all areas except for a couple of stations in North Alabama, and even those should manage to make 50F before the afternoon is out.

The current readings are some 5-10 degrees below normal for this time of year.

The airmass is very dry across the area, and skies are mostly cloud free. There were a few stratocumulus clouds associated with a little mid-level energy earlier, but those have mostly dissipated.

We will be gearing up for a cold night across the area with lows expected to range between 27-31F across Central Alabama. This will be sufficiently cold to produce a damaging freeze for tender vegetation. Take precautions to protect any vulnerable plants you don’t want to lose.

A freeze warning is in effect for much of the state of Alabama. Only places like Mobile, Gulf Shores, Atmore, Brewton, Andalusia, Enterprise, Ozark and Dothan will escape without a freeze.

It will be a mostly cool and dry week across Alabama. A front will pass through the area on Wednesday, but the atmosphere will be very dry and no precipitation is expected. Just a reinforcing shot of cool, dry air for Thanksgiving.

The Iron Bowl forecast looks good, with just increasing clouds and slightly warmer than normal readings in the lower and middle 60s during the game. Winds won’t be a factor.

Our next significant rain chance looks like it will arrive until the first weekend in December.
