Mid-Afternoon Central Alabama Weather Update

| November 22, 2017 @ 2:56 pm

With the staff of the AlabamaWx Weather Blog now operating on a holiday schedule throughout the rest of the week and weekend, I will delay my midday posts to about 2:30 PM or so each day to help cover for James’ regularly-scheduled afternoon posts.

CONDITIONS AT 2:30 PM

It is a clear and a little breezy afternoon across the portions of Central Alabama that is along and north of the I-20 and I-20/59 corridors. South of that, we have a few high clouds that have encroached into the area from the south as a low is bringing moisture up to the Gulf Coast of Florida. No rain for the white sandy beaches of Alabama. Temperatures are running in the lower 50s to the upper 60s throughout Central Alabama at this point, with Birmingham sitting at 59º.

YOUR WEATHER FOR THE REMAINDER OF TODAY

We’ll have mainly clear skies in the north, with a few high clouds hovering over the southern parts of Central Alabama throughout the remainder of the afternoon and early evening hours. Afternoon highs will be in the mid-50s to the upper 60s throughout the area. Mostly clear skies throughout the overnight hours, with lows dipping down into the upper 20s in the north to the mid-40s in the south.

CALM AND COOL WEATHER FROM THANKSGIVING DAY THROUGH THE WEEKEND
It is an unusual weather pattern that has set up for Central Alabama for this time of the year, as we are accustomed to seeing a system with storms pass through here every few days or so. Looks like we’ll have mostly sunny and pleasant days with fair and chilly nights starting on Thursday and lasting all of the way through the weekend. Afternoon highs will generally be in the upper 50s to the lower 60s, with lows ranging in the 30s to the lower 40s.

FORECAST FOR SOME BOWL MADE OF IRON… WHAT’S THAT? (HA HA HA)
Temperatures will be starting off in the lower 50s down on the Plains in Auburn at 8:00 AM for pre-game tailgating. By the time kickoff arrives at 2:30 PM, skies will be mostly clear and the temperatures will be at its warmest in the mid-60s. By the end of the game, the temperatures will be down in the mid-50s, and steadily dropping into the lower 50s by 10:00 PM. Winds will be out of the west-northwest at 5-10 MPH throughout the day.

THE TROPICS
The end of the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season will be here in just eight days, and at this point, we have nothing to report on in the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, or the tropical Atlantic Ocean. Stay up-to-date with the latest updates on all of the tropical systems out in the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, or in the Gulf of Mexico with the latest posts in our Tropical Weather category. ON THIS DAY IN WEATHER HISTORY
1992 – 25 years ago, much of the Southeast and Midwest states was in the middle of a three-day severe weather outbreak. A southerly flow from the Gulf of Mexico in the lower levels combined with colder westerly winds making the perfect combination for the development of long-lasting severe storms. Once the severe storms started firing off during the early afternoon hours of the 21st, there was nearly no break in tornado activity until the morning hours on the 23rd. By the end of the event, there were 95 tornadoes reported stretching from southeastern Texas up to southwestern Maryland, and as far north as northeastern Indiana. 26 people lost their lives and another 638 were injured. One more thing we can be thankful for this Thanksgiving holiday is not having to deal with severe weather, especially in light of this event and the fact that November is a secondary tornado season for parts of the country.
