An Awesome Midday Across Central Alabama

| November 29, 2017 @ 11:59 am

For much of the area at the midday hour, bright sunshine and warmer temperatures are being felt. We do have some cloud cover over the southwestern parts of the area that has been dissipating throughout the morning and should continue to do the same during the rest of the afternoon. We also have some clouds trying to sneak in from Mississippi in the southwestern parts of the area, and these could start to block out some sun as they continue to move in this afternoon.

Temperatures at the 11:30 AM point of this fine “Hump Day” are mainly in the mid-60s to the lower 70s throughout the area, with the exception of where the cloud cover in the southeastern parts is holding temperatures back in the upper 50s to the lower 60s. Birmingham is currently at 71 degrees, while the warm spot is Troy at 73 degrees.

For the remainder of the afternoon and into the early evening hours, most of Central Alabama will continue to have mainly clear skies. We will have more clouds start to roll in from Mississippi ahead of the surface front that will be bringing our rain chances for tomorrow. Afternoon highs will mainly be in the 70s today, with a few places staying in the 60s. For tonight and into the overnight hours, clouds will continue to be on the increase and shower chance begin to rise after midnight in the west and moving eastward as the pre-dawn hours click off. Overnight lows will be in the lower to mid-50s throughout the area, with the higher rain chances staying in the western parts of the area before sunrise.

For Thursday, we can expect scattered showers throughout much of the day in Central Alabama, with the coverage increasing as we approach the afternoon hours. After that, a line of showers is expected to form along the cold front as it pushes through during the nighttime hours. It will not be an all-day rain event, but rain chances will be in the 50-60% range. Most of the rainfall should be out of here by midnight, but I wouldn’t be surprised if a stray sprinkle or two lingers into the pre-dawn hours on Friday. No strong or severe weather expected with this system, just some good ole rain. Rainfall totals should end up being around or a little more than 1/4-inch. Tomorrow’s highs will be in the 60s to the mid-70s throughout the area, with overnight lows dropping into the 40s and 50s.

Tomorrow is the last day of the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season, and it is also a big birthday for my wife. At this point, it is all quiet in the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, or the tropical Atlantic Ocean, and it looks like we’ll be able to close out the season on a calm note. On this day in 1969… Dense fog along the Jersey Turnpike resulted in a chain reaction of vehicle collisions during the morning rush hour. A propane truck jackknifed and was struck by a trailer truck, and other vehicles piled into the fiery mass.
