Winter Weather Advisory Extended Southward, Some Road Closures Reported

The National Weather Service in Birmingham has extended the Winter Weather Advisory a little further southward to now include Lee, Lowndes, Macon, and Montgomery counties. Here is the latest from the NWS…

Cold air moving in from the west and northwest will cause rain to continue to mix with and change to snow this morning.
Temperatures are expected to remain at or just above freezing while the snow falls, but accumulations are expected with the highest amounts on grassy and elevated surfaces. Forecast accumulations have been raised in a swath across Central Alabama where a winter storm warning has been issued.

A Winter Storm Warning continues in effect until midnight tonight for Bibb, Calhoun, Chilton, Clay, Cleburne, Coosa, Greene, Hale, Jefferson, Marengo, Perry, Randolph, Shelby, St. Clair, Sumter, Talladega, Tallapoosa, and Tuscaloosa counties until 12:00 AM Saturday.

A Winter Weather Advisory continues in effect for Autauga, Blount, Chambers, Cherokee, Dallas, Elmore, Etowah, Fayette, Lamar, Pickens, and Walker counties until 12:00 AM Saturday.

Snow is expected. Plan on difficult travel conditions, including during the morning commute. Total snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are expected, with the highest amounts on grassy and elevated surfaces. Some locally higher totals may occur.

UPDATE: ROAD CLOSURES AND POWER ISSUES

All streets are reported closed in Anniston (Anniston PD). Many traffic accidents were being reported earlier throughout Calhoun County).

All streets are reported closed in Lincoln (Lincoln City Officials).

Power is out for most of the city of Helena. Traffic lights are out throughout the city, and phones are down at the Helena Police Department. Call 911 for emergencies.

Many power outages being reported in Pelham (Pelham PD). Lines are down due to the heavy wet snow.

All Piedmont city roads are closed (Piedmont PD).
