A Quick Check On Our Conditions And The Forecast As We Approach Midday

| January 8, 2018 @ 10:56 am

CONDITIONS THROUGHOUT NORTH/CENTRAL ALABAMA

Radar at 10:46 AM continues to show shower activity over the northern third of the state, with a dry slot in the central parts, with more showers in the south. The good news at this point is that every reporting station in North and Central Alabama is above freezing, ranging from the mid-30s in the north to the mid-40s to the south. Any icing issues out there in the area should begin to melt away and by noon, all travel issues in the northeastern parts of the state should be cleared. If driving in that part of the state, please use caution and take your time.

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY

A Winter Weather Advisory continues until 12:00 PM for Jackson and Dekalb counties in North Alabama, and for Cherokee, Etowah, Calhoun, Cleburne, Clay, and Randolph counties in Central Alabama.

WEATHER FOR THE REMAINDER OF YOUR MONDAY

We’ll continue to have cloudy skies and periods of rain, but temperatures will continue to slowly climb through the remainder of the morning and through the early afternoon hours. By noon, the Winter Weather Advisories should have expired as temperatures will range from the mid-30s in the north to the upper 40s in the south. Afternoon highs will make it into the upper 30s to the mid-50s. For tonight, rain will be decreasing for the northern locations while scattered showers remain possible in the south. Overnight lows will dip down into the mid-30s to the upper 40s from north to south.

A GRAY BUT WARMER TUESDAY

Skies will mainly be cloudy throughout North and Central Alabama throughout the day, but temperatures will continue on this short warming trend. A few leftover showers are possible in the southeastern corner of Central Alabama during the morning, but we should be dry throughout the remainder of the day. Afternoon highs will be quite balmy compared to last week’s temperatures, topping out in the lower 50s in the north to the lower 60s in the south. Lows will only drop to the mid-40s to the lower 50s, thanks to the cloud cover. I wouldn’t be surprised if patchy dense fog developed in a few locations, but a light breeze may keep that from happening.

ON THIS DAY IN WEATHER HISTORY
1973 – A severe ice storm struck Atlanta GA. The storm paralyzed the city closing schools and businesses, and damage from the storm was estimated at 25 million dollars. One to four inches of ice coated northern Georgia leaving 300,000 persons without electricity for up to a week. Between 7 PM and 9 PM on the 7th, 2.27 inches (liquid content) of freezing rain, sleet and snow coated Atlanta, as the temperature hovered at 32 degrees.
