Late Night Radar/Report Roundup: Roads Hazardous Across Much of the Area

| January 16, 2018 @ 9:38 pm

Radar and temperatures at 930 p.m. CST

It is a rough night on the roads tonight across much of Alabama, and snow continues to fall tonight over Southwest and South Central Alabama.

Our neighboring states have problems as well, especially Mississippi.

Let’s look at some reports:

BIRMINGHAM
Moderate to heavy snow continues across parts of Sumter, Greene, Hale, Marengo, Perry, Dallas, Wilcox, Autauga, Coosa, Tallapoosa and Elmore.

Winter weather advisory has been canceled for Marion, Lamar, Walker, Winston and Fayette Counties. Snow has ended, but widespread snowcovered roads are in place tonight across these counties. Stay off the roads, many of which are closed, including officially closed across Fayette and Winston Counties.

A winter weather advisory continues for the rest of the Birmingham area of responsibility, including: Bibb, Blount, Calhoun, Cherokee, Chilton, Clay, Cleburne, Coosa, Etowah, Greene, Hale, Jefferson, Marengo, Perry, Pickens, Randolph, Shelby, St. Clair, Sumter, Talladega and Tuscaloosa.

Roads are also impassable across much of this area and snow continues to fall across much of the area tonight.

Some reported road closings:

…Calhoun County, including the cities of Weaver (all roads impassable) and Jacksonville (all city roads closed).

There are hazardous road conditions as well across parts of Jefferson County, especially the Hoover and Bluff Park areas. Same for Tuscaloosa, where at least four roads have impassable conditions.

Roads are slick across parts of Shelby County, including Helena and Alabaster.

Some Randolph County roads are becoming slick.

Roads in Chilton County are slick and impassable. 0.4 inches of snow is on the ground at Clanton.

Some icy roads in the Gadsden area as well.

You do not want to get out tonight anywhere cross the area and have an accident, especially given that temperatures are in the teens and lower 20s across the area. Wind chills are in the now in the teens across Central Alabama, and the single digits in North Alabama. The wind chill at Haleyville is down to -2F. A hard freeze warning and wind chill advisory is in effect for tonight and early Wednesday. The hard freeze warning extends through tomorrow night as well.

HUNTSVILLE
Wind chill advisories are in effect for the Tennessee Valley. Roads are treacherous Marshall Counties across much of the area. Snow has increased tonight over Northeast Alabama’s DeKalb and Marshall Counties. This snow will impact Cherokee County (in Birmingham’s area of responsibility).

JACKSON
Southern Mississippi is a mess tonight, where some of the heaviest snow is falling.

Just a few reports:

…All major roads in Lawrence County, south of Jackson, are iced over with several accidents including an ejection from a car that struck a bridge. Temperatures are in the lower 20s which will make things very treacherous overnight. Winter weather advisories continue in effect for much of southeastern Mississippi.

…US-80 is solid ice in Meehan in eastern Mississippi, west of Meridian.

…Numerous accidents in Brookhaven with 1.2 inches of snow as the final total.

…Covington County MS, along US-49 between Jackson and Hattiesburg, reports roads icy with numerous accidents.

…Laurel had heavy snow earlier and reported roads were getting icy by 7:30. They are worse now with light snow continuing and 22F.

…Multiple bridges iced and impassable in Hattiesburg.

…Interstate 59 is icy throughout southeastern Mississippi. The Mississippi Highway Patrol is reportedly slammed.

From Eric Carpenter at the NWS Jackson:
I say this to anyone with reach in south central MS, in whatever manner you can do it, please stress to folks that they stay off the road…incredibly dangerous for any travel with these kinds of temperatures and wind chills.

MOBILE
…Several streets closed in Thomasville.

Winter weather advisory is in effect for all South Alabama and the Florida Panhandle for the threat of snow. Wind chills and a hard freeze warnings are in effect as well.
