I’d best describe the current weather pattern as somewhat non-descript with nothing in the way of significant weather changes over the next week. This is due in part to a fast flow in the upper atmosphere for the next several days before a shot of colder weather arrives in the latter half of the week.

For today, we’re waking up to a foggy, misty morning. Lots of folks got rain yesterday evening and early this morning, but as the Storm Total Precipitation image from the Birmingham WSR-88D showed the amount were light for most of North and Central Alabama – around a tenth of an inch. But over South Alabama the amounts were somewhat highs with spots getting amounts estimated to be in the 2 to 3 inch range. Clouds will linger around much of the day today with some peeks at the sun possible this afternoon across North and Central Alabama while the southern sections remain cloudy with rain.

Rain stays put across the South Sunday and a short wave will move quickly across the area bringing an end to the clouds and rain by Monday as a surface high settles in over the Central and Eastern US. And the fast flow begins to evolve into a long wave trough over the Eastern US. This begins the transition to colder weather by the end of the week.

A strong short wave – actually a couple of them – Wednesday brings another storm system and wet weather to the Southeast. And these strong short waves help to deepen the long wave trough position over the eastern US bringing some relatively cold air into Alabama. In fact, it looks like Thursday could be one of those days when temperatures stay steady in the 40s or fall into the 40s depending on the exact timing of the arrival of the colder air. And Friday morning could be pretty chilly with lows in the 20s and highs inching only toward 50 degrees.

But the cold is short-lived with the long wave trough moving off the East Coast Saturday and Sunday. And as we look into voodoo country, the GFS is suggesting we transition back to a fast zonal flow with a string of short waves bringing quickly changing weather our way again.
