Waves of Rain Through Tonight, Strong Storms Possible for Southwest Alabama

| February 25, 2018 @ 3:14 pm

A long, stationary front extends from south of Nashville through Northwest Alabama, northern Mississippi, Central Louisiana and into South Texas this afternoon.

Moisture is increasing to our southwest and rainfall has been increasing in coverage and intensity across Central Mississippi back into Central Louisiana. In addition, heavy rain and storms are increasing over Southeast Texas. This increase in activity is in response to an upper-level trough that is swinging out onto the Plains states.

Light rain continues to fall across Central Alabama this afternoon with temperatures in the 50s. The moderate to heavy rain over Central Mississippi is lifting toward Central and North Alabama and at least three waves of precipitation will impact these areas later this afternoon through the evening. The main and final rain area, which will involve strong storms over Southwest Alabama, will move into the state around 10 p.m.

Severe weather is possible overnight for areas along the Gulf Coast from Southeast Texas, across southern Louisiana into southern Mississippi and parts of Southwest Alabama. The main threat will be damaging winds but there could be an isolated tornado as well between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. in areas south of US-80 in Southwest Alabama.

Here is the SPC Outlook:

No severe weather threat for the I-20 corridor, however. Just another inch of rain possibly.

The rain will end starting around 4 a.m. around Hamilton, around 6:30 a.m. in Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and Gadsden. It should be out of all of Central Alabama by 10 a.m., exiting the Auburn area by then.

Monday will feature increasing sunshine with highs in the 60s. Monday night lows will be in the 40s. Tuesday will start out nice, but rain will return by Tuesday night. Unsettled weather will continue for Wednesday, with rain and storms ending by noon Thursday. Cooler and dry weather will prevail into the weekend.
