Beautiful Today, Rain Tomorrow

A beautiful day is in store across Central Alabama before rain moves in tomorrow. The models have come into agreement on the timing and rainfall amounts, so let’s dig into the details.

Today’s Highs from the GFS

FOR YOUR SATURDAY: We are starting off cool across the state on this Saturday morning, with lows in the upper 30s over the northeastern part of the state to lower and middle 40s over the rest of the area. Skies are starting out mostly clear, and will remain mostly sunny all day. High temperatures will be right on seasonal norms, running 71-78F across the area, with the warmer readings south of US-78/280. It will actually feel like Spring today in a season that has seen feelings of Spring seem elusive.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Alabama holds its A-Day game and festivities today at 1 p.m. at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Fans can expect perfect conditions, with a good supply of sunshine and temperatures rising from the lower 70s at kickoff into the middle 70s during the game.

HON-DA!! One of the biggest sporting events of the year in Alabama is going on this weekend at the Barber Motorsports Park. And the weather is going to be perfect today. It might rain tomorrow, but we’ll cross that bridge. Make plans for the event that has been voted “Best Annual Event” & “Best Sporting Event” in Birmingham. SUNDAY RAIN: The deep trough has closed off into a huge bowling ball of an upper level low. The whole system will be lumbering across the Arklatex by tomorrow morning. Rain should reach western Alabama by late tonight and increase in coverage and intensity through the day on Sunday. The surface low will track slowly eastward across Alabama Sunday afternoon and evening. Rainfall amounts will be generous, running 1.5-3 inches across most of the area. There will barely be any thunder involved across the northern half of the state, with a few storms producing some gusty winds over southwestern sections. The SPC does have a marginal risk for severe weather in areas south of a line from Demopolis to Greenville to Dothan. I doubt we will see much there either. Highs will be cool, in the 60s.

THE WORK WEEK: The trough will not be going anywhere quick, and unsettled weather will continue. Another trough will follow on the heels of the first, arriving Thursday, and then another for the weekend. Monday there will be a little lingering light rain and Tuesday will be cloudy with a few showers. Wednesday looks like it will be dry, but there could be a few showers Wednesday night as the second trough moves past. AS the final trough makes it way across on Friday, there could be a few more showers. Then the stage will be set for a pretty nice weekend. Highs all week will be near 70F. Lows will be in the lower part of the 50s.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Rain should exit late Sunday along the beautiful beaches of Alabama and Northwest Florida and it will be springlike all week along the coast. ON THIS DATE IN 1967: Today is the 40th anniversary of the worst tornado disaster ever in the Chicago, Illinois area. Forty four tornadoes struck the area from Missouri and Iowa through Illinois and Michigan, including at least six F3 twisters. A total of 58 people perished.
