Warm, Dry Weather Through Friday

| April 30, 2018 @ 3:26 pm

CLOUDLESS SKY: Nothing but sunshine across Alabama today; after a chilly start temperatures have warmed nicely; most communities are in the mid to upper 70s. Tonight will be clear with a low in the 50s.

REST OF THE WEEK: An upper ridge will continue to build over the eastern third of the nation. For Alabama, this means the warmest weather so far this year… afternoon temperatures will reach the low 80s tomorrow, and mid 80s Wednesday through Friday. Despite a major severe weather threat to the west on Wednesday, we will continue to forecast dry conditions around here for the rest of the week.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: The feature responsible for the expected severe weather across the Plains Wednesday will weaken and lift well to the north of Alabama, but it will drag a cold front in here Saturday. Accordingly, we will forecast a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms as the weekend begins. Keep in mind the upper ridge will still be in play, so warmer air aloft means a fairly stable airmass, and with little upper support we figure the rain won’t be too widespread or heavy. Just keep in mind you might have to deal with a passing shower or storm from time to time Saturday and Saturday night. The sun should be out at times, and the high Saturday afternoon will be in the low 80s.

The front will creep into South Alabama Sunday and begin to fizzle out; we will keep the risk of scattered showers and storms in the forecast, but the 12Z GFS model run has trended drier for Sunday. Otherwise, we will forecast a mix of sun and clouds with a high around 80 degrees.

NEXT WEEK: The first half of the week looks warm and generally dry as the ridge holds. In fact, it looks like we will experience highs in the 80s right on through mid-May. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

WET APRIL COMING TO AN END: Birmingham’s rain total for April is 8.25″, almost double the average amount for the month. The total for the year so far is 21.87″, a surplus of 3.03″.
