Alabama’s first female governor, Lurleen Burns Wallace, 41, died of cancer in Montgomery on May 7, 1968. The 46th governor of Alabama, she served for 15 months from January 1967 until her death. Lurleen Wallace succeeded Gov. George Wallace because Alabama’s constitution at the time forbade consecutive terms. She was Alabama’s first female governor and remained the only woman to hold the position until Kay Ivey took office in 2017. Lurleen Wallace is the only female governor in U.S. history to have died in office.
