Early Afternoon Update: Strong Storms Tracking East

| May 17, 2018 @ 1:09 pm

ACTIVE AFTERNOON RADAR: Strong storms are tracking through Central Alabama this afternoon. At around 1PM, a line of strong storms was moving through West Alabama, moving to the east and east northeast at nearly 30 mph. The curved line extends from just western Tuscaloosa County down through Greene, Hale, Marengo, and Choctaw counties.

From the northern end to the southern end, individual cells within this line are producing heavy rain, tremendous amounts of lightning and gusty winds. There is likely some small hail mixed in with this line of activity as well. At this time, most of these are below severe limits, but one cell on the southern end of the line has caused the NWS in Mobile to issue a Severe Thunderstorm Warning. As far as the rest of the line, they are getting close to severe limits, and we are monitoring them just in case, since they are pushing into very unstable air as we approach peak heating. The storms should reach the Birmingham Metro and Intestate 65 corridor south to Montgomery around 3PM.

There are additional showers and storms spread across eastern portions of the state as well. As we have seen the past few days, intense tropical downpours are expected with any storm, and these can produce tremendous amounts of rain over a short period of time and likely produce isolated flash flooding. Always remember to TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN, if you encounter flood waters. Also, if you can hear thunder you can be struck by lightning, so WHEN THUNDER ROARS, HEAD INDOORS.

These showers and storms should continue through the afternoon and evening hours before gradually winding down overnight with the loss of daytime heating.
