Bright, Sunny, & Hot At Midday Across Much Of Central Alabama

| June 20, 2018 @ 11:09 am

CONDITIONS ACROSS CENTRAL ALABAMA AT 11:00 AM
It is a pleasant day outdoors in Central Alabama if you have an affinity for hot and humid weather. A few showers are showing up over the northwestern parts of the state, but none so far in our area. Temperatures are already up into the mid-80s to the low 90s from northwest to southeast. Birmingham was at 90 degrees, but Tuscaloosa and Montgomery were the hot spots, both at 91 degrees. At this point most of the area is enjoying mostly clear skies, but there is some cloud cover in the extreme northern parts of the area being pulled over from the tropical system that moved onshore in Texas a few days ago.

WEATHER FOR THE REST OF YOUR WEDNESDAY
Our precipitable water values will begin to increase later this afternoon and throughout the evening as a trough with an associated low pressure center currently stationed over the northern Plains moves closer to Central Alabama, bringing an increase to our shower and thunderstorm chances. For the remainder of the morning into the early afternoon, shower and thunderstorm chances will be low, around 20-30%, but will increase to 30-50% with the higher chances mainly along and north of a line from Demopolis to Birmingham to Gadsden. Afternoon highs will be up in the lower to mid-90s with overnight lows in the lower to mid-70s.

SHOWERS & THUNDERSTORMS MORE LIKELY ON THURSDAY
As the trough invades Central Alabama, it will pull moisture up from the tropical disturbance that has been dumping plenty of rain over the southeastern parts of Texas and into Louisiana and Mississippi. Showers and thunderstorms will be likely tomorrow as a cold front associated with the trough will stall out just to our north across Tennessee. Instability values will start to rise and a few of the thunderstorms may be strong to marginally severe, with strong downdraft wind gusts being the main threat. The good news is that we’ll catch a break in our daytime highs, as they’ll be in the mid-80s to the lower 90s from north to south. The bad news is that the humidity will be even higher, so we won’t be able to feel the difference.

AN UPDATE ON THE TROPICS
The North Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico is calm at this time, and no new tropical cyclones are expected throughout the next 5 days.
