Heat Advisory Expanded for Parts of North, Northwest and West Central Alabama this Afternoon

Dewpoints are in the middle and upper 70s across North and Central Alabama today, pushing heat index values to near and above 105F. This is the threshold for potentially dangerous heat that can impact the human body and heat advisories have been posted.

Here are heat index values at 11 a.m.:

Disregard the Jasper reading which has a high temperature bias.

The NWS in Birmingham has added counties to the heat advisory that is in effect until early this evening across Central Alabama and the NWS in Huntsville has done the same:

* NORTH ALABAMA COUNTIES INCLUDED: Colbert, Cullman, Frankling, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison and
Morgan.

* CENTRAL ALABAMA COUNTIES INCLUDED: Autauga, Barbour, Bibb, Bullock, Chilton, Coosa, Dallas, Elmore, Fayette,
Greene, Hale, Jefferson, Lamar, Lee, Lowndes, Macon, Marengo, Marion, Montgomery, Perry, Pickens, Russell,
Shelby, Sumter, Tallapoosa, Tuscaloosa, Walker, Winston.

* EFFECTIVE UNTIL 7 p.m. CDT this evening

* TEMPERATURE…temperatures will rise into the middle 90s this
afternoon with heat indices near 105 degrees across Central Alabama
and up to 107 degrees over North Alabama due to temperatures in the
low to mid 90s, and dewpoints in the mid 70s.

* IMPACTS…Heat-related illnesses may be possible for those
outdoors in unshaded areas.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When
possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when
possible and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety
and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest
breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome
by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat
stroke is an emergency, call 9 1 1.

expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity
will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are
possible. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned
room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and check up
on relatives and neighbors.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham has issued a Heat
Advisory, which is in effect from 10 AM this morning to 7 PM CDT
this evening.

* COUNTIES INCLUDED: Marion-Lamar-Fayette-Winston-Walker-Pickens-
Tuscaloosa-Sumter-Greene-Hale-Marengo

* SOME CITIES INCLUDED: Hamilton, Sulligent, Vernon, Fayette,
Double Springs, Jasper, Carrollton, Tuscaloosa, Livingston,
Eutaw, Greensboro, Moundville, Demopolis, and Linden

* TEMPERATURE…temperatures will rise into the middle 90s this
