Alabama 811 | Know What's Below.

Less Storms Today

| July 22, 2018 @ 6:45 am

The sky was mostly clear this morning with just a few patches of clouds here and there. A weak front has moved into the southern portion of Alabama this morning, so the primary area for showers and storms will be across South Alabama with isolated storms possible in North and Central Alabama. With slight lowered precipitable water values today, I think most of us remain dry. Highs once again will top out around the 90-degree mark.

All remains quiet across the Atlantic basin and tropical storm formation is not expected through early next week.

For the first part of the week ahead, we will remain in a somewhat anomalous weather pattern as a rather deep trough will continue over the eastern US. This pattern will keep the weather somewhat unsettled across the Southeast US as we maintain a humid air mass. Showers and storms will vary from day-to-day ranging from scattered to numerous at times Monday and Tuesday. Highs will be mainly in the upper 80s.

Wednesday we begin the process of lifting the upper trough out of the Southeast US. While the trough will not be nearly as strong/deep as we see for the first of the week, the GFS maintains the pattern of a weak trough over the eastern half of the country into next weekend while the ridge is stuck over the Four Corners area. This will keep us in a regime of scattered showers driven primarily by diurnal heating for the afternoon and evening hours – rain chances will be in the 20 to 40 percent range. Highs will be mainly in the lower 90s, actually pretty close to the 30-year averages for this time of year.

The pattern is forecast to sharpen a bit by next Sunday as a strong short wave trough moves across the western Great Lakes and digs into the eastern US once again. This keeps us out of the extreme heat, but unfortunately will keep the upper ridge over the western US where heat will be a big issue during this week.

Rainfall will vary across the Southeast US in a west to east gradient. Much of Alabama will see rainfall totals through next Friday morning of less than one inch.

The GFS remains consistent in the long range by keeping the idea of a trough along the Mississippi River Valley through the 5th of August. But by the 7th of August the GFS brings the Bermuda High into the eastern US suggesting hotter weather for the eastern US.
