Here are some reports early this morning from our Skywatchers, and from the official stations…

Broomtown (Cherokee County) 22 (with a “big frost”)
Scrougeout (just northeast of Gadsden) 26 (Vic Bell reports “huge, killing frost” there)
Reece City 29
Fort Payne 29
Coker 30
Snead 30
Concord 30
Crestview, Florida 30
Troy 32
Birmingham 33
Tuscaloosa 33

Some of our Skywatchers report they have been below freezing for over six hours.

These, of course, are not final lows; J.B. will post a long list later this morning. This should be our final freeze of the season; next time we deal with a frosty morning, most likely, will come when the Halloween pumpkins are out in the fall.

WARMING UP: With a sunny sky today, we will warm into the 60s today, with mid 70s likely tomorrow. Clouds will increase late tomorrow in advance of a storm system that will bring the risk of strong to severe storms tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night to areas west of Alabama (see the Weather Xtreme video for details).

STRONG STORMS FRIDAY? SPC has now defined a low end slight risk of severe weather for much of our state on Friday; I am still not convinced we have a big problem with severe weather with a unidirectional wind profile, but I guess the storms on Friday could produce some hail if we can destabilize enough. We always have to watch short waves in April. Rain amounts on Friday should be in the one-half inch range.

EASTER WEEKEND: Saturday looks nice as the sky becomes mostly sunny; the high should be close to 70 with a north wind. The wind turns back to the south Sunday, but the day should be dry with a high up in the mid 70s. Then, another round of showers and storms is likely late Sunday night into Monday; the 00Z GFS is back on the idea of the main threat coming from 12:00 midnight Sunday to 12:00 noon Monday. We need to get Friday’s system out of here before we really feel confident about the timing of this. And, this seems to have a decent potential for producing strong to severe storms.

Drier air will follow that feature by Monday night and Tuesday of next week, and the rest of the month continues to look active with frequent rain producing systems, which is what you expect in April in Alabama.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left. Our new show is posted… we will post show notes a little later this morning.
