Scattered Storms Continue

| September 1, 2018 @ 6:49 am

Some clouds could be found in the Alabama sky this morning left over from the convection that just kept going yesterday evening and helped to delay or postpone several high school football games. Temperatures this morning were around the 70-degree mark with highs once again expected to reach the upper 80s with the potential for isolated showers and thunderstorms. Best/deepest moisture resides over the southwest counties of Alabama where the best chances for precipitation will exist today.

Football Weather: Auburn takes on Washington in Atlanta in Mercedes Benz Stadium (2:30 pm CDT kickoff). Outside the domed stadium, afternoon temperatures will be in the 87-90 degree range with the risk of a shower or thunderstorm. This evening, Alabama will take on Louisville in Orlando (7:00 pm CDT kickoff). The weather will be humid and a shower or thunderstorm is possible during the game, mainly during the first half. Kickoff temperature in the lower 80s falling into the upper 70s by the final whistle.

Tropics: The disturbance near the Cape Verde Islands became Tropical Storm Florence early this morning. It will move over the far eastern Atlantic, far from land over the weekend and early next week. The storm is currently forecast to remain a tropical storm through the middle of next week.

A tropical wave over Hispaniola will move toward the Gulf of Mexico next week, but NHC gives it only a 10 percent chance of development over the next five days due to harsh environmental conditions. It could bring some rain to the Gulf Coast over the latter half of the week, so we will keep an eye on it.

The upper air pattern will see the large upper ridge remain over the eastern US through about Thursday. This keeps us on the edge of any excessive heat and also keeps us in fairly good moisture. This points pretty much to scattered showers and thunderstorms driven primarily by the heating of the day. We will maintain a close watch on the weak tropical wave coming across Florida and into the northwestern Gulf of Mexico during the first half of the week. There is quite a bit of difference between the ECMWF and the GFS on just how strong it will become. NHC has a 20 percent chance for development of a storm over the next five days, however, conditions in the northern Gulf are somewhat more conducive for possible strengthening. The upper ridge should keep it away from Alabama.

High temperatures will remain within a couple of degrees of 90 for the week ahead with morning lows near 70.

By the end of the week, the upper ridge will weaken considerably as a strong trough moves across the Great Lakes and drags a front into the Southeast US. With the presence of the front, we could see rain chances go up a good bit, but we are verging on voodoo country.

No voodoo country outlook today due to an issue with getting the latest graphics. Also, I had issues with trying to upload graphics this morning, so there are none in this post. See the video for all the graphics.
