A Quick Check On Our Weather Situation Just After Midday

| September 12, 2018 @ 1:42 pm

While I’m waiting for the family van to be inspected after we could not avoid a sewer manhole that is well elevated above the surface of the road, I have some time to take a look at our weather situation. Fortunately, I had my laptop with me before I left to come to the shop.

Skies across Central Alabama are currently partly cloudy as we make the run up to 1:30 PM, but radar shows a good bit of scattered showers and a few embedded thunderstorms mainly over the eastern and southwestern parts of the area. None of these look heavy or strong, but a few are putting down some decent rainfall. The good news is that these are not sitting over the same locations for long as they are moving to the west at around 10-15 MPH.Temperatures are currently in the mid-80s to the lower 90s, with Birmingham sitting at 88 degrees.

We’ll continue to have partly cloudy skies throughout the remainder of the afternoon and into the early evening hours, with a chance of isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms. The higher risks for those will be in the eastern half of the area, in the 30-40% range. The rest of the area will have a 20-30% chance of getting a shower or storm. Afternoon highs will top out in the upper 80s to the lower 90s.

For this evening and through the overnight hours, shower and storm chances will diminish mostly for Central Alabama, but I wouldn’t be surprised if a stray shower or two linger around in the south and southeastern parts of the area until just before midnight. Skies will range from mostly clear in the northwest to partly cloudy for the rest of the area, and lows will be in the upper 60s to the mid-70s.
