Hurricane Preparedness Week

Wow, hard to believe that it is almost the start of hurricane season. June 1 marks the beginning lasting until November 30. The National Weather Service is dedicating this week as Hurricane Preparedness Week. This is a great time to begin thinking about what you and your family would do if a hurricane was making it’s way through the gulf coast and up to central Alabama.

If you have lived here in central Alabama for some time, you know that tropical systems can certainly leave their mark here. We usually end up with numerous tornado warnings, trees down, power outages, and even floods. And you can’t forget about the wind either. It’s not unusual for a hurricane to produce wind gusts between 50 and 90 mph here in central Alabama. That happened with hurricanes, Opal, Ivan, Dennis, and Katrina.

It’s important to remember that even though we are not directly on the gulf coast, hurricanes do affect us here in central Alabama and it’s important to be prepared.
