Chamber Of Commerce Weather At Midday

| October 22, 2018 @ 1:07 pm

CONDITIONS ACROSS CENTRAL ALABAMA AT 12:40 PM

It’s an absolutely beautiful day across Central Alabama during the noon hour… only a couple of clouds drifting across the cobalt blue skies. Temperatures are running in the lower 60s to the lower 70s, with Birmingham sitting at 64 degrees. The warm spot was Uniontown at 72 degrees, while the cool spot in the area was Cullman at 62 degrees.

WEATHER FOR THE REST OF YOUR MONDAY
We’ll continue to have mainly clear skies throughout the afternoon and into the early evening hours. It will feel really nice with mild temperatures, topping out in the upper 60s to the lower 70s across the area. For later tonight and into the overnight hours, skies will remain mainly clear and overnight lows will not be as cool as this morning, falling into the lower 40s to the lower 50s.

PIZITZ MIDDLE SCHOOL’S BALLOON LAUNCH IS A SUCCESS

For the third year in a row, I have been asked to help out with teaching the sixth grade students at Pizitz Middle School in forecasting for launching a weather balloon. Bill Murray and myself spent 2 days during the beginning of the month teaching these awesome future meteorologists about the 4-Panel GFS Model from the National Weather Service and what to look for when doing a forecast for a launch date. After those two days were finished, the excitement was high and those new launch officers got busy in working up a forecast that led to today’s launch.

The above video is from the launch at 11:30 am CDT this morning. After lift off, the balloon climbed nearly vertical as winds close to the surface were light. After a few minutes of drifting to the northwest while rapidly climbing, it met winds that were coming out of the west-northwest at a much faster rate. As of 12:35 pm CDT, the balloon was located just to the north of Vincent at an altitude of just over 31,000 feet. If our morning simulation runs are correct, we should have a recovery point somewhere in central Heard County in west Georgia. It may go more into Central Georgia as I don’t believe that the simulation picked up on the winds above the 300mb level being much higher around 105 knots. I’ll have an update when the payload floats back to earth and the recovery team is able to locate it.

CHECK ON THE TROPICS

All quiet across the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and the Atlantic Ocean, with no formation expected throughout the next five days. No so quiet in the Pacific as Category 5 Hurricane Willa is starting to make its final approach on the western Mexican coast. Winds are currently at 160 MPH and landfall is expected to occur in little over 24 hours. Willa is expected to weaken rapidly as it moves across Mexico and the remnants will move over the Gulf of Mexico and bring rain to the Gulf Coast and up into Central Alabama on Thursday and Friday. Reorganization is not expected once the remnants move over the Gulf of Mexico.
