The following information is from an official press release from NWS Birmingham…

National Weather Service Birmingham Office to Host Open House

In celebration of the 25th anniversary at its current location, the National Weather Service (NWS) Birmingham Office, located at the Shelby County Airport in Calera Alabama, will be hosting an open house this Saturday, October 27th, 2018, from 10 AM to 3 PM. The public is invited to attend this free event, rain or shine!

The office will be open for public tours during this time, and guests will have the opportunity to see inside the operations area, meet the staff, and learn more about the NWS mission and the history of the Birmingham office. The NWS will also have a scaled working model of a WSR-88D NEXRAD radar on site to provide information on how this powerful tool works and helps meteorologists issue life-saving severe weather warnings. Guests will also enjoy a variety of displays from local first responders, local and state emergency management offices, and other NWS partners.

Attendees will have the opportunity to enter a drawing for door prizes, and there will be plenty of activities for the kids, including a chance to help launch a weather balloon with Owlie Skywarn at noon. Local media partners from the Birmingham, Montgomery, and Tuscaloosa television markets will be on hand with their storm chaser vehicles and to meet and greet weather enthusiasts from the entire Central Alabama forecast area.

Since many of our local football fans will have to adapt to a weekend off from tailgating, there will also be food trucks on site to help you enjoy your visit with us in Calera.
