Looking For Rain

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below, and on iTunes…

We are looking, but not finding any. The 00Z GFS is very dry for Alabama for the next 16 days.

SHORT TERM: Today will be very warm, most places will rise to the 86 to 90 degree range this afternoon with a good supply of sunshine.

The most interesting feature after today is the wedge of cooler air trying to push into Alabama from the east tomorrow and Thursday. The NAM is the most aggressive with the wedge; it drops the high in Birmingham to 79 on Thursday, while the GFS shows 82. One way or another, we should be a few degrees cooler, with the most significant cooling near the Georgia border.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: No real change, mostly sunny warm days and clear nights. Highs back into the 85 to 90 degree range. Some hint on the GFS of isolated showers Monday, but the chance of any one spot getting wet looks so small now it sure isn’t worth mentioning in the forecast. No rain for the Gulf coast or the Great Smoky Mountains over the holiday weekend.

TROPICAL SYSTEM NEXT WEEK: The 00Z GFS continues to develop a tropical storm near the western tip of Cuba next week, but this run moves the system northeast into the Atlantic, not helping us at all in the rain department. Of course, we are still in voodoo land, but hopes of a central Gulf coast wet-down are looking smaller.

LONG RANGE: To make matters worse, by June 6 the GFS builds a 5880 meter ridge across the southern U.S. at 500 mb, which simply means more dry and very warm weather. Not good.

WEATHER BRAINS: We recorded a new Weather Brains last night… Kevin Selle will post the show notes here shortly. You can listen to the show on the web, or on iTunes

WEATHER PARTY: Get all the latest weather news over on our sister site, WeatherParty.com. Be sure and register while you are there; you can submit stories and vote on them to determine what is published on the front page.
