Another Beautiful Fall Day On Tap for Alabama

| November 18, 2018 @ 6:59 am

Dense fog is affecting areas around valleys and waterways this morning across Central and Northeast Alabama. Advisories are in effect, so use caution if driving.

SATURDAY REVIEW: Yesterday was a gorgeous Fall day across the state, with lots of blue skies, some high clouds at times and even a few haloes around the sun. Temperatures topped out in the 60s across the area, including 65F at Anniston, Auburn, Birmingham and Calera, and 68F at Tuscaloosa. Perfect weather for a little last minute gardening, early shopping or a football game!

SPEAKING OF WHICH: This is the week with two important forecasts every year: Thanksgiving, of course. And the Iron Bowl! Alabama and Auburn clash Saturday in Tuscaloosa and football fans will be holding their breaths that the system due in here Friday night will be gone by game time Saturday afternoon. The global models agree that that will be the case, but we will be watching to see if the system decides to overstay its welcome. Temperatures will be mild for the game, in the 60s.

WELCOME RAINFALL LATELY: The system will bring another three-quarters of an inch of rain to Alabama, which will be welcome since our 90-day totals are hovering right around even to the averages for this time of year. Most of Alabama, except for the southwestern corner, is above normal now for the past thirty days, ninety days and the running 365 days, which has continued recent improvements in the drought monitor.

OH, AND THERE’S BLACK FRIDAY: The biggest shopping day of the year promises to be turning wet late in the day, so get that shopping done early. Temperatures will start off in the 40s and rise only into the middle 50s with the clouds and rain.

TRAVEL FORECAST: Wednesday’s busiest travel day of the year looks really good nationally with no major threats weather wise from rain or snow. Returning on Sunday looks decent as well, except over the Great Lakes and Northeast, where a couple of systems could bring delays.

BUT WHAT ABOUT TODAY? Today looks to be a carbon copy of yesterday, with highs well into the 60s under a good supply of sunshine. Get out and enjoy what will be the nicest day of the next two weeks.

TOMORROW: Changeable. Increasing clouds. Showers arrive in western sections by late afternoon and there could be a few showers over South Central Alabama before that, in the afternoon hours. The quick-hitting showers will move through during the evening, leaving only about a tenth to a quarter of an inch of rain.

TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY: High-pressure dominates. Travel will not be impacted nationally.

TURKEY DAY: Looks great in Alabama. Partly cloudy and dry. Highs around 60F after morning lows in the 40s.

VOODOO COUNTRY: A wet weather system looks like it might be skirting to the south of Alabama for December 1st and the end of the period, December 4th, looks tranquil for Alabama.

WEATHERBRAINS: We will be reviewing this past week’s snowstorm in the Northeast and the politica firestorm that followed. Check out the show at weatherbrains.com.

ON THIS DATE IN 1957: An F4 tornado cut a 27-mile path across parts of Blount and Marshall Counties, killing 3 people. An F2 tornado cut a path across the Birmingham area from Ensley to Tarrant City, damaging over 500 homes and resulting in one fatality. Other tornadoes touched down near Tuscaloosa and in Greene and Hale Counties. The Tornado Project lists an F4 the day before in Walker County that killed 4 people.
