Skies Slow to Clear, Mercury Slow to Recover

| January 20, 2019 @ 11:52 am

Skies are slowly clearing across parts of North and Central Alabama at late morning. The progress has been slow, and this has made it hard for temperatures to overcome the cold air advection that is going on behind our cold front. Readings are still below freezing across a large part of the northern third of the state, including Birmingham. The best we can hope for this afternoon is upper 30s in most spots.

The total lunar eclipse should be visible tonight, although conditions will be cold for viewing it. Temperatures will fall into the 20s before the event gets going around 10:41 p.m.

Monday will be sunny but cold, with highs in the 40s. Tuesday will see a return of 50s as our weather changes again. Rain will be increasing as we go through Tuesday afternoon and evening with heavier rain on Wednesday. There could be a little thunder on Wednesday as well, but no severe weather is expected. Rain could briefly change to snow behind the front Wednesday night into Thursday morning. It doesn’t look like accumulations will be a problem with this system, but we will be watching.

Thursday will feature colder weather and there is a chance Friday might remain in the 30s all day, or even remain below freezing most of the day.

Passing disturbances on Friday and Saturday could be responsible for a little snow over North and Central Alabama as well. It is too early to take these model forecasts very seriously, but it is an idea that is on the table. The GFS has come more into line with the Euro’s idea of precipitation well down into Central and Northeast Alabama Saturday night. Again, we will be watching and waiting for the new run of the Euro.
