Unusual Severe Weather Notes
* SPC has posted a PDS Severe Thunderstorm Watch for NE Oklahoma, South and SW Missouri and NW Arkansas until noon, CDT today.
* PDS stands for Particularly Dangerous Situation. Rare to have that designation for a thunderstorm watch. It is used most of the time with a tornado watch.
* Powerful bow echo now moving across SW Missouri and entering NW Arkansas. Remember our recent experience with a powerful bow echo when thousands of trees were uprooted in Central Alabama?
* When that bow moved across the airport at Joplin, Missouri this morning, a wind gust of 86 mph was recorded at 7:43 am. No doubt there are many, many trees down and probably other damage. No specific reports yet.
* SPC has a “Moderate risk” today for South Missouri and Extreme North Arkansas. It is within a “standard” Slight Risk area that extends all the way from NE Texas to Kentucky and Tennessee. The north third of Mississippi also included as well as Extreme North Alabama and Extreme North Georgia. It includes all of Tennessee and Kentucky.
