Sunday Weather Xtreme Video: Decreasing Clouds and Mild Today; Warm Monday and Tuesday as Well

| May 5, 2019 @ 6:00 am

Well, we came through Saturday’s severe weather threat fairly unscathed. There was fairly significant damage in Elmore County, where what appears to be straight-line winds downed several trees and damaged some structures. Most of the damage was around Wallsboro and the community of Elmore. Rainfall amounts were fairly generous north of I-20, averaging some 1-3 inches. Parts of South Central Alabama also had decent amounts, but the middle of the state didn’t fare as well. Amounts rain one-half inch or less across much of the area just south of I-20.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: A surface low is moving into the Mid-Atlantic state this morning after passing through Alabama last night. The upper-level trough that was providing the support for this surface low is passing across the state this morning. It will bring slightly drier air into the state today. A few leftover showers on the back side of the low will diminish and pass eastward this morning. Clouds will gradually decrease as we go through the day. The models are predicting highs in the 70s north of US-80, ranging from lower 70s in the Tennesee Valley to middle to upper 70s along and near I-20. Lows tonight will be in the upper 50s to near 60F.

WARM START TO THE WEEK: Monday and Tuesday will feature ridging at the surface and aloft. This will allow for dry and warm conditions. Highs both days will be in the middle and upper 80s. Lows Tuesday morning will be in the lower 60s. Clouds will start to increase on Tuesday ahead of the next storm system.

MIDWEEK AND BEYOND: Showers and storms will return to the forecast on a daily basis as troughing starts to develop across the Lower Mississippi Valley again. A warm and moisture-rich air mass in place means showers and storms will highlight the forecast on a daily basis, with the greatest coverage during the peak heating of the day during the afternoon and evening hours. Highs will be in the mid-80s and lows will be in the 60s.

WEEKEND SNEAK PEEK: Unfortunately showers and storms will remain the forecast as we roll into the weekend as a moisture-rich air mass remains in place across the state. Expect highs in the lower 80s and lows in the 60s with little change in the day-to-day weather forecast as it looks like we settle into a fairly routine summer pattern across the state.

VOODOO COUNTRY: The showers will continue through the middle of the following week before high pressure finally takes back over. That pattern will hold through the 21st of the month or so. Expect warm conditions to continue. Rainfall amounts should be decent, averaging 2-4 inches over the next two weeks.

REGIONS TRADITION: The Regions Tradition will be May 8-12 at the beautiful Greystone Golf & Country Club! Make plans to attend one of the majors of the PGA Champions Tour! You can see legendary golfers Miguel Ángel Jiménez, Fred Couples, John Daly, Vijay Singh, and more tee it off with Nick Saban, Gus Malzahn, Bo Jackson, Condoleezza Rice, and other celebrities in the NCR Pro-AM. Juniors 18 & under are admitted free with a ticketed adult, and five-day grounds tickets are $100. Single day grounds tickets are $25. GET YOUR TICKETS HERE!!!

BEACH FORECAST CENTER: Going to be a pretty nice week along the beautiful beaches of Alabama and Northwest Florida. A decent supply of sunshine, and just scattered afternoon and evening showers and storms. Highs will be in the 70s, Lows will be working their way through the 60s into the lower 70s. Get the latest weather and rip current forecasts for the beaches from Fort Morgan to Panama City on our Beach Forecast Center page. There, you can select the forecast of the region that you are interested in visiting.

WEATHERBRAINS: THe panel will be talking to emergency managers on Monday night’s show. If you’re not listening to the best netcast about weather, you need to be. It’s filled with familiar voices, including host James Spann.

ON THIS DATE IN 1933: An F4 tornado cut a 35-mile path from near Brent in Bibb County into Shelby County. The town of Helena was especially hard hit, where 14 people died.
