Early Morning Look at Alabama’s Weather: Showers/Storms South This Morning, Scattered Strong Storms This Afternoon, Strong to Severe Storms Late This Afternoon and Evening

| May 11, 2019 @ 5:21 am

It is a warm and humid morning across North and Central Alabama. A few scattered showers are in the I-20 Corridor. Temperatures are in teh middle and upper 60s.

A complex of showers and storms over southern Mississippi is sliding east northeast this morning. Showers are already over western Alabama’s Choctaw, Washington and Marengo counties. This activity will push across South Central and South Alabama during the morning, remaining generally south of a line from Livingston to Calera to Heflin.

Most of the day will be rain-free north of this line, with only a few scattered showers and storms. A couple of those could be strong to severe, but this will not be the main activity, most likely. Skies will tend to be mostly cloudy, with periods of sunshine interspersed.

It will be a warm day, with highs in the middle and upper 70s north of I-20, and in the lower 80s to the south of it.

Instability will increase across Central Alabama during the day, and we will be watching developments to the west. If a line of thunderstorms develops over Mississippi during the afternoon, these storms might pose a greater severe weather threat.

Currently, there is a marginal risk (1/5) on the SPC Outlook for about 95% of Alabama. If organized storms move in from the west during the late afternoon and evening, the risk may have to be upgraded.

There will be a lull during the late evening and early morning hours. Thunderstorms will increase during the pre-dawn hours ahead of a cold front. This cold front will move across Alabama during the day on Sunday. By late morning, thunderstorms will intensify, most likely east of I-65 and south of I-20. Severe weather could become a threat again across this part of Alabama.

Much nicer weather will return for Monday and Tuesday.

Scott will have the Weather Xtreme video up before 8 a.m. We will have frequent updates throughout the day.
