MIdday: Warmer Than Wednesday, But Still Rather Nice

12:50 pm: The latest visible satellite loop shows some convective clouds forming across much of Central Alabama as we are approaching the 1 o’clock hour, but there is no rain involved with any of those clouds at all. Temperatures across the area are currently in the lower 80s to right at 90 degrees. Birmingham was at 84 degrees. A few locations in the southern parts of the area were tied at 90 degrees while the cool spot was Haleyville at 82 degrees. Dewpoints remain in the upper 50s to the lower 60s across the area, so while these temperatures are quite warm, they are definitely not unbearable at all.

Skies will continue to be mostly clear for the most part across Central Alabama, but a few more clouds may build in the southeastern parts of the area making skies partly cloudy. We stay dry with afternoon highs reaching the upper 80s to the lower 90s across the area. For tonight and through the overnight hours, any clouds will dissipate as we lose the daytime heating and skies will become clear. Overnight lows will be in the mid to upper 60s for most with a few locations dropping into the lower 60s and possibly the upper 50s in the extreme northern parts of the area, especially in the colder valleys.

High pressure centered over the Appalachian Mountains will keep much of the moisture out of the area on Friday and skies will be mostly clear. Afternoon highs will be in the upper 80s to the lower 90s, and with humidity levers starting to rise a little bit, it will feel just a little muggier outside than today… but still not too bad.

THE TROPICS
The National Hurricane Center has discontinued the risk for a tropical system developing in the northern Gulf of Mexico at this point, and therefore, all of the Atlantic Basin is free from any threats of a tropical system developing within the next five days.

ON THIS DAY IN WEATHER HISTORY
1956 – The Andrea Doria sank in dense fog near Nantucket Lightship, MA. The ship was rammed by the Swedish-American liner, Stockholm, forty-five miles off the coast of Massachusetts. Fifty-two persons drowned or were killed by the impact.
