Lorenzo Intensifies into Category Five Hurricane

Hurricane Lorenzo has intensified into a powerful category five hurricane tonight. It is the second cat five of the season and the strongest hurricane this far north and east in the Atlantic.

Top winds are 160 mph. It will peak in intensity overnight tonight.

The storm has tremendous convection around its center, very cold cloud tops as cold as -70C.

The system will slide west of the Azores on Tuesday night. Tropical storm conditions may occur there.

It will become a powerful extratropical storm by Wednesday but could bring 70 mph winds and higher gusts to Ireland late Wednesday into Thursday.
