New Storms From Mississippi Moving Into Unstable Atmosphere

| April 9, 2020 @ 5:35 am

As of 5:26 am, storms moving into the western portions of Central Alabama is moving right into some very unstable air. Surface-based instability values are currently in the 500-1500 J/kg range across the southern half of the area out ahead of these storms. We still have a good bit of bulk shear reaching 55-60 knots, so these storms will continue to have the potential for damaging winds up to 60 MPH and some hail up to quarter size.

We are still in a Slight Risk for severe storms until 7:00 am for locations that are along and ahead of these storms. The severe weather threat has ended for locations behind these storms.

As of 5:25 am, the cold front was just now beginning to enter into the northwestern corner of the state and will slowly push through the area during the remainder of the morning hours and into the early afternoon. Rain should be out of the area by the beginning of the afternoon and drier air will be moving in behind the front. Highs look to top out in the lower 70s to the mid-80s across the area from northwest to southeast.
