CLOSE TO RECORD LOWS AGAIN: Birmingham’s 5:00 a.m. temperature is 65 degrees; that is within 3 degrees of the record low for the date… 62 set back in 1966. Our Skywatcher up in Northeast Etowah County, Vic Bell, is reporting 57 degrees. Once again, very refreshing for late July in Alabama. We can thank dry, continental air for the morning coolness, and that means rain-free weather through tomorrow. Afternoons will get warmer, with a high around 90 today, followed by low 90s tomorrow. But, the humidity will stay low. Keep in mind that Birmingham has now gone 8 consecutive days with temperatures below 90 degrees.

SUNDAY AND NEXT WEEK: A surface boundary will approach Sunday, and we will bring in the risk of scattered afternoon thunderstorms. Some of the storms could be rather strong as they drift down into our state during the peak of the daytime heating process; SPC has low end severe weather probabilities down into the Tennessee Valley, but no formal severe weather risk at this time. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.

The front stalls out just north of here, and next week could be relatively wet, with scattered showers and storms each day, possibly numerous at times. Looks like temperatures next week will remain below average values, with highs mostly in the upper 80s.

VOODOO LAND: Still no sign of any really serious heat wave here, but keep in mind August is always hot. But, with a mean western ridge and eastern trough, temperatures here should be a little below average, with rainfall above average.

TROPICS: This morning is very wet and windy along the New England coast, but the system responsible for that is a non-tropical low near Cape Cod. The rest of the Atlantic basin is very quiet, and tropical storm development is not expected through the weekend.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: There will be a risk of scattered showers and storms along the Gulf Coast on a daily basis through early next week, otherwise about 4 to 6 hours of sunshine each day with a high in the upper 80s on the immediate coast. The sea water temperature last night at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab was 82 degrees.
